Nancy's movement background includes training into black belt ranks in Shorin-ryu Karate and 10+ years of Taijiquan experience and completion of the Teacher Training Program at the Magic Tortoise School of Taijiquan. She also sings in the Choral Society of Durham. She particularly enjoys creating class series that evoke efficiency and comfort for the human mover. Her Feldenkrais Method practice, Move with Elan, is based in Chapel Hill. Classes: Feldenkrais(r)--Transitions (no class July 4th) Jonathan Baxter Classes: Advanced/Maidan Hooping, Hooping-Fundamentals Scott Campbell Scott Campbell took his first yoga class while in high school in Texas some 30 years ago. He journeyed to Los Angeles as a professional actor for 15 years, before coming to North Carolina and developing a regular yogic practice 7 years ago. His experience and training as an actor, as well as the obstacles he encountered, have given him insight into the body and emotions and the connection between the two. Yoga has allowed him to develop and use that awareness in a meaningful way to assist others in finding healing, openness, and meaning in their lives. Scott has studied Indian, Taoist, and Buddhist yoga and teaches an eclectic mix of many styles. He is a certified Integral yoga instructor. Classes: Hatha Yoga (Intermediate/Beginner's Welcome), Laughing Meditation (2nd Saturday & 4th Friday), Yoga for Bodies that Don't Bend Candy Conino Classes: Feldenkrais-Awareness Through Movement: Spiral-icious--Part II (May 21-June 25) Jay Dunbar Dr. Jay Dunbar is Director of the Magic Tortoise School. His dissertation (Ph.D., Education, UNC-1991) was on Taijiquan instruction in America. He has served as chief judge of forms and push-hands in numerous tournaments. He is a senior student of the late Grandmaster Jou, Tsung Hwa. Classes: Qigong: Taiji Ball Qigong (begins March 4, 2008) Kate Finlayson Kate Finlayson found Nia at the age of 50 after years of chronic pain, frozen shoulders and low energy. When the music played and her body began to dance in rhythmic flow, she knew she was Home. Her journey has brought amazing self-healing and self acceptance, focus and patience, life-force energy, and immense joy in movement. She trained in 2005 and became a White Belt instructor in the Chapel Hill-Durham area. She continued her training in October of 2006 with Nia creators Debbie and Carlos Rosas and brings Blue Belt wisdom for body, mind, emotions and spirit to her teaching. Kate loves sharing the magic of Nia with others! katefin@yahoo.com Classes: Nia Kay Goldstein, M.A. Kay’s unique intuitive attention to each class member is an integral part of her teaching style. She draws from many techniques and modalities to assist each class member deepen their meditation experience and understanding . For the past 16 years, Kay has practiced primarily Taoist meditation as taught by Leong Tan from the Chinese community in Malaysia and Dr. Neala Peake, a psychologist teaching in Atlanta, GA. She holds a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology and a second degree Reiki certificate. In addition, Kay has studied and practiced Jewish, mindfulness, and Buddhist forms of meditation along with bioenergetics and the use of flower essences. Classes: Exploring Meditation Sarah Honer Classes: Pilates Mat (Beginner / Intermediate), Pilates Plus Suzanne Kennedy Suzanne began tribal dancing 4 yrs ago in Syracuse, NY, learning from a fabulous dancer and yoga instructor, Lorie Bebber of Shezam!, who trained with Jill Parker. She moved to San Francisco (the birth place of American Tribal Style belly dance) for personal growth and to study the dance for 2 ½ years with Jill Parker and Rose Harden of Ultra Gypsy, Carolena Nericcio of Fat Chance Belly Dance, and the Suhaila School of Dance. While in San Francisco, she performed in and helped manage a student troupe. She has taken many workshops, attending Tribal Fest and Spirit of the Tribes, as well as taking classes throughout the US and abroad. This has provided her the opportunity to study with top notch performers such as Mira Betz, Rachel Brice, Domba, Kassar, Urban Tribal, Farfesha, Aruna, sword dancers Farhana and Marguerite, as well as instructors from Turkey and Turkmenistan. Although she has studied with the best, she considers herself a perpetual student of the dance and continues to take workshops and classes. Her aim is to bring her travels to you, while maintaining a fun, supportive environment that allows you to achieve your own personal growth. Her teaching style is one that incorporates all learning styles, using analogies to learning a language and constructing a story, to enhance grasping the dance. Her focus is on muscular moves, building core strength, and putting the belly in tribal belly dance. Classes: Language of Tribal Bellydance Group Led Classes: Contact Improv Jam Terry McCarthy Terry McCarthy is a teacher, performing artist and InterPlay leader. He is a founding member of Off the Deep End Ensemble and former director of Inner Voices vocal ensemble. Terry is a former elementary school teacher with a BS degree in Arts for Children with Music Emphasis. He teaches InterPlay performance,storytellying and writing classes. Terry serves as a bodyspirit mentor with the Raleigh InterPlay Regional Leadership program. Classes: InterPlay (2nd Friday) Chris Newsome Chris Newsome has been dancing since childhood and has been studying various dance styles since the age of 13. He has a love for hip-hop, and teaches high energy classes at Ninth Street Dance in Durham and Peak Fitness Gym in Chapel Hill. Chris has also taught funk at UNC as part of the Carolina Fitness Program. Classes: FUNK (NEW time!) Jaime Powell Jaime Powell is a cerified personal trainer and yoga instructor with a focus on holistic health, corrective, and functional exercise. By treating the body, mind, and spirit as a whole system, and actively consulting with and referring to other holistically minded health professionals, Jaime has helped people of all ages drastically improve their well being. Jaime Powell is an author, speaker, consultant, and educator and has used these modalities as vehicles to deliver the message that we have the resources within to move from mere survival to optimal health.
