Capoeira

Wednesday, 6:30 pm-8:30 pm, Força Unificada > bio
Capoeira is a martial art created by African slaves in Brazil over 400 years ago. Over time, cultural elements of dance, fight, music and art merged to create what we call capoeira. Often referred to as the dance-fight-game, capoeira is a martial art that emphasizes dance, play, and music as heavily as martial aspects. In the art of capoeira, one learns to dance, one learns to play instruments and one learns a martial art, all the while with a smile on one's face, and a swing to one's step. Força Unificada: Força Unificada is a capoeira group based in Carrboro, North Carolina. All levels are welcome. $45/month.

Life is a process of growth and change, yet change can be tough. Finding a way from “here” to “there” in your life can be an expression of creativity or it can be a struggle. Moving from one position to another in space can be done haphazardly with great effort or with simplicity and elegance. Overwhelming effort can decrease your sensitivity to finding the easiest possible way from here to there. This class will explore simple physical movements of transition: from lying down to sitting, from sitting to standing, from standing to lying down as a metaphor for moving through transition more easily in your life. No struggle or holding your breath is necessary. You’ll be amazed at how simple it is to get from “here” to ‘there”.

Tribal belly dance interweaves elements from various dances and practices on top of a belly dance foundation that highlights the strength of the feminine. From these movements you will be encouraged to develop your own personal style while maintaining proper technique and dance posture. We will start with 35 minutes of conditioning combining yoga, Pilates, and calisthenics to build strength while connecting with the music surrounding us. Next, we will spend 50 minutes on isolating different muscles and learning how your body moves through dance, while bringing awareness to your breath, the music, and the feminine energy within and around you. Qigong: Taiji Ball Qigong (begins March 4, 2008)
Tuesday, 6:30 pm-7:30 pm, Jay Dunbar > bio
Class Pass cost: $10
Drop-in cost: $12
Come experience the playful power of Taiji Ball: a series of simple moves with hand-held spheres that match the elegance and spherical action of other Taiji (T’ai-Chi) forms. Taiji Ball conditions the muscles, nourishes the spine, strengthens the torso, teaches the mind to move internal energy (Qi: "chee") and develops suppleness, circularity, smoothness, and sensitivity. We begin with lightweight spheres and increase the weight at an individual pace. Recently rediscovered, Taiji Ball was once a common training tool to develop root, power, coiling, energetic awareness and martial ability. It is an excellent foundation for further study of Taiji or as an auxiliary to any other sport or workout. Bring a light ball (less than 5 pounds: a child’s play ball of rubber or plastic, or a volley or soccer ball will do.)

Yoga Explorations
Friday, 9:30 am-11:30 am, Molly Drake > bio
Class Pass cost: $16
Drop-in cost: $20
Yoga Explorations offers the student an internal, creative, and exploratory approach to hatha yoga. The unhurried atmosphere of the class encourages one to slow down and to let go of pre-conceived notions of what yoga is about. Students are encouraged to relax and nurture a keen curiosity about what they are feeling. Guided inwardly to organically explore their rich inner world of energy, breath, and movement, students make new discoveries about themselves and find that their poses begin to unfold with less effort and worry about technical precision or correctness. The poses become living, breathing creatures and authentic expressions of self rather than habitual positions. Therein lies the challenge of this class. Open to all levels of students who wish to connect more deeply with themselves and the world in which they live.
